Unbeknownst to most, there is an estimated thirty billion dollars of unclaimed money sitting in a government bank account waiting for the rightful owner to claim it. As astounding as it seems, everyone that is owed money from the account is unaware that it's there. If they knew, they would have claimed it. Enter you.

A business in recovering unclaimed government money, or as people in the trade call it, asset recovery, is built primarily on reputation versus most businesses that are founded on large financial investments. For little to no money you can start claiming the lost funds on behalf of the people that are owed. Typically the finder is paid a portion of the money as a finder's fee. The percentages will vary anywhere from ten percent to thirty percent, sometimes higher. That's where your negotiation skills come in. Usually the rule of thumb is the higher the amount of money to be recovered, the lower the percentage you would take. The work load is pretty much all the same and convincing someone to give away fifty percent of a hundred dollars is going to be a lot easier than convincing someone to give away fifty percent of a hundred thousand dollars.

In the asset recovery business, the hardest part of the job is not finding your clients. There are more websites than you can count that offer free searches of the unclaimed government money database. Many sites claim to offer you low monthly membership fees to search the database when really all they've done is pulled from the free database and spruced it to supposedly make it more user friendly. They won't tell you that, of course. Instead they will make you think you have to pay to access the database. Don't fall for it, you can get all the information you need to start your new business at no cost.

So if finding the clients is easy, what's the hard part? Contrary to most businesses, in the asset recovery business you are trying to "sell them money." In any other business you are offering a tangible product or a verifiable service. It's harder than you would think to convince people they have money sitting somewhere that they don't know about. It's human nature to think that if it's too good to be true, it must be a scam. So the hardest part of this business is not finding clients, but convincing clients. So if sales is your thing, recovering unclaimed government money could come second nature to you.
